How to Keep Your Horse Warm and Healthy During Polar Vortex

Before you know it winter will be here.  Are you prepared to keep you horse warm from the cold.

It is most essential to make sure your horse has fresh water that is not freezing cold during these below freezing days of cold.  Even if your horse is in a stable, you must still check for ice in their buckets.

Keeping a heavyweight turnout blanket on your horse is a very good idea to help them from loosing weight from shivering.  Higher protein foods will also keep them warmer.

Make sure your horse has shelter of some kind if outside.  Your heavyweight turnout blanket should be waterproof and breathable in this case.

As the days start to warm back up, adjust your blanketing system to a lighter blanket and cut back on the high protein hay and grain.

If you want to spoil your horse, a hot bran mash is a very healthy treat.
